Alexa can vouch that I have an eclectic taste while she has a very steady style. She helps keep my house from looking like the circus just threw up everywhere. I’ll explain. Most times when people tell me about their career I think, “I want to do/be that!” The same goes for home styles. When I see a new trend, I think, “I could do that in my bedroom, mudroom, laundry room, etc.” It’s easy for me to get carried away and then the cohesive feeling in my home is lost. I call Alexa and she grounds me while also helping me stay true to the bold styles I love. That’s why she is so good at home designing.

It’s easy to think of designing each room separate from another. My bedroom is way upstairs at the far end of the house. What does its design have to do with my kitchen? For some, the answer is, nothing, and they go about their day. However, I would like to invite you to think of making your home consistent and I will explain how.

Color is a way to help rooms flow from one to another. My house is mostly green, blue, and terracotta. You’ll find these colors in most rooms. I have a light terracotta hutch in my kitchen that brings out the same color in my living room rug. My daughters’ room (which is also on the main floor) is a dark clay color and this way the main floor has flow.

Upstairs we just finished painting the TV/bonus room a different version of this color called Setting Plaster by Benjamin Moore and I’m loving it! I’m adding blush with this same tone to the baby’s nursery, and I just got myself a new terracotta comforter for our master bed. I promised myself I would get a fresh bedding set after the days of darkness while I was pregnant and rarely left my room. Now my upstairs has flow, and my main floor is connected to the second floor as well. Do you see how it’s coming together?

The same can be done with textures, furniture styles, lighting, accents, etc. I love mid-mod furniture and you can find it sprinkled throughout our house. I also like to switch out my switch plates from the standard ones to add interest that is unique to our home.

I will tell you one of my secret desires is to have a vintage style. When I see someone who has so perfectly decorated their house with old sewing machines and radios from the 50s I get tempted to buy the next old item I come across. My fingers itch for it when I see the perfect clock from days gone by, but I try to restrain myself as it would be out of place. This is not to say that you can’t have 2-3 styles running throughout your home but try to stick with those to keep your home more zen. Please tag us if you have a room that needs some love for the new year. We’re here to help!
